Alexander Wang has a Wang Squad. No, seriously, they even have an Instagram account (@wangsquad) of tall, beautiful and impossibly aspirational it-girls such as Lexi Boling, Anna Ewers, Binx Walton and, lately, Kaia Gerber (Cindy Crawford’s mini-me daughter).

So, unsurprisingly, the Alexander Wang SS/16 collection isn’t about the clothes, it’s about his squad. This collection is pure street style and—just like photographer Steven Klein’s gritty campaign photos—it’s full of texture, fringe, leather, mesh and chain metal straps! The clothes are almost basic: monochromatic tank tops and crop tops, silk pajama tops and dresses, frayed denim shorts, bomber jackets and clunky flat sandals. But the devil in Wang’s design detail is the tough metal chains, which show up in tank top straps, in jewelry and on purses. This collection is not high fashion. It’s not spring-like either, unless your idea of spring is black, drab grey and dark olive. This collection is pure attitude— aggressive, raw and clannish. In the Wang’s world the clothes aren’t for the individual, they’re for the squad.
